यह पर्व हर वर्ष कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि को मनाया जाता है। यह दिन दीपावली से लगभग आठ दिन पहले आता है। इस व्रत का महत्व उत्तर भारत के राज्यों — उत्तर प्रदेश, दिल्ली, पंजाब, हरियाणा, राजस्थान आदि — में विशेष रूप से देखा जाता है।

अहोई अष्टमी का अर्थ

‘अहोई’ शब्द संस्कृत के “अह” (दिन) और “हिंसा” (हानि) से मिलकर बना है। इसका भाव है — संतान के जीवन में किसी प्रकार की हानि न हो। इस दिन अहोई माता की पूजा करके माताएँ यह संकल्प लेती हैं कि वे अपनी संतानों की सुरक्षा और भलाई के लिए पूरे हृदय से प्रार्थना करेंगी।

अहोई माता कौन हैं

अहोई माता को संतान की रक्षक देवी माना गया है। उनकी प्रतिमा या चित्र में प्रायः एक बिल्ली (सिंहनी के समान) और सात छोटे शावक दिखाए जाते हैं। यह सात शावक सात संतानों का प्रतीक हैं।

कहते हैं कि अहोई माता का संबंध पार्वती जी से भी जोड़ा जाता है। जिस प्रकार माँ पार्वती ने अपने पुत्रों गणेश और कार्तिकेय के लिए कठिन तप किया, उसी प्रकार माताएँ भी अपने बच्चों के लिए यह व्रत करती हैं।

अहोई अष्टमी की कथा

प्राचीन समय की बात है, एक साहूकार की पत्नी के सात पुत्र थे। एक दिन वह दीपावली से पहले घर की मरम्मत के लिए मिट्टी लाने जंगल गई। मिट्टी खोदते समय अनजाने में उसकी फावड़ी से एक साही (या बिल्ली) के बच्चे को चोट लग गई और वह मर गया। यह अनजानी भूल उसके जीवन में भारी साबित हुई।

कुछ ही दिनों में उसकी संतानें एक-एक करके मरने लगीं। साहूकार की पत्नी अत्यंत दुखी होकर ऋषि-मुनियों के पास गई और अपने पाप से मुक्ति का उपाय पूछा। उन्होंने कहा कि वह कार्तिक कृष्ण अष्टमी के दिन अहोई माता का व्रत करे और सच्चे मन से प्रायश्चित करे।

उसने ऐसा ही किया। अहोई माता उसकी भक्ति से प्रसन्न हुईं और उसे आशीर्वाद दिया कि उसकी संतानें सुरक्षित रहेंगी। तभी से यह व्रत हर साल संतान की लंबी आयु और सुरक्षा के लिए किया जाने लगा।

अहोई अष्टमी व्रत विधि

अहोई अष्टमी की पूजा बड़ी श्रद्धा और शुद्धता से की जाती है। यहाँ इसकी संपूर्ण विधि दी जा रही है

1. प्रातः स्नान और संकल्प – सूर्योदय से पहले स्नान कर साफ वस्त्र धारण करें। मन में संकल्प लें कि “मैं अहोई माता का व्रत अपने पुत्र/पुत्री की दीर्घायु और सुख-समृद्धि के लिए कर रही हूँ।”

2. पूजन स्थल की तैयारी – दीवार या कागज पर अहोई माता का चित्र बनाएं। इसमें सात शावक और एक बिल्ली (माता का प्रतीक) अंकित करें। पास में एक छोटा कलश जल से भरकर रखें।

3. पूजन सामग्री – जल, चावल, रोली, दूध, गेहूँ के दाने, फूल, दीया, मिठाई और सात प्रकार के अनाज रखें।

4. पूजन विधि –

* सबसे पहले अहोई माता को प्रणाम करें।

* दीया जलाएं और कथा पढ़ें।

* गेहूँ के सात दाने माता के सामने रखें — ये सात संतान या सात पीढ़ियों की समृद्धि का प्रतीक हैं।

* पूजन के बाद कथा सुनना या पढ़ना अनिवार्य माना गया है।

5. व्रत का नियम – यह व्रत पूरे दिन निर्जला या फलाहार रहकर किया जाता है।

6. संध्या के समय – जब तारे निकलते हैं, तब अहोई माता और सप्तर्षि तारों को जल अर्पित किया जाता है।

7. व्रत खोलना – तारों के दर्शन के बाद महिलाएँ व्रत तोड़ती हैं और संतान के हाथ से जल ग्रहण कर आशीर्वाद लेती हैं।

अहोई अष्टमी का धार्मिक महत्व

अहोई अष्टमी व्रत केवल धार्मिक नहीं, बल्कि भावनात्मक दृष्टि से भी अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। यह व्रत मातृत्व की शक्ति और त्याग का उत्सव है।

In ancient times, a moneylender's wife had seven sons. One day, she went to the forest to collect soil for house repairs before Diwali. While digging, her shovel accidentally struck a porcupine (or cat) baby, killing it. This inadvertent mistake proved fatal for her.

Within a few days, her children began dying one by one. The moneylender's wife, deeply distressed, went to the sages and asked for a way to atone for her sin. They advised her to observe a fast for Ahoi Mata on Kartik Krishna Ashtami and repent with a true heart.

She did so. Ahoi Mata was pleased with her devotion and blessed her with the safety of her children. Since then, this fast has been observed annually for the long life and safety of her children.

Ahoi Ashtami is worshipped with great devotion and purity. Here is the complete method:

1. Morning Bath and Sankalp – Bath before sunrise and wear clean clothes. Resolve in your mind, "I am observing the Ahoi Mata fast for the long life and happiness and prosperity of my son/daughter."

2. Preparation of the worship site – Draw a picture of Ahoi Mata on the wall or paper. Inscribe seven cubs and a cat (symbolizing the mother) on it. Place a small pot filled with water nearby.

3. Worship materials – Place water, rice, roli, milk, wheat grains, flowers, a lamp, sweets, and seven types of grains.

4. Worship method –

* First, pay obeisance to Ahoi Mata.

* Light a lamp and recite the story.

* Place seven grains of wheat in front of the mother – these symbolize the prosperity of seven children or seven generations.
